Burg Nehren

The Burg Nehren once stood on a low tongue of land jutting into a small lake on the eastern edge of Nehren. Built in the 13th century by the Lords of Nehren as their family seat, it was enlarged late in that century. Archaeologists uncovered its remains in 1951, revealing metre-thick stone foundations descending into the slate beneath the centre of the roughly square mound. Excavations showed a rectangular building, perhaps a stone house or watchtower, surrounded by an eleven-metre-wide moat. The mound itself measures about twenty-eight metres across and lies in a field called the Weihergarten. These traces are all that remain of the once substantial water fortress. Visitors today walk over the quiet field where the foundations lie buried beneath the turf. The site is marked only by a low rise and a few information boards. From the mound there are wide views across the surrounding farmland and the wooded slopes beyond. The spot offers a quiet reminder of the medieval stronghold that once defended this stretch of the upper Neckar valley.
