Apollo-Theater

The Apollo-Theater was a theatre in Hannover’s old town, run from the 19th into the 20th century. It stood at the corner of Schillerstraße and Reitwallstraße, close to the city’s workers’ movement. The building had once housed a workers’ cultural venue before it became a theatre. The theatre opened special gala performances for the 1899 May Day celebrations. In 1903 Marie Fidler, a theatre director, bought the corner property. Her husband Heinrich Fidler managed the theatre and lived in the second floor flat. Postcards and stage designs from the period show the building and its stage. Visitors today find a quiet corner where the theatre once stood. The site is still in the old town, near the former municipal reading hall. The area keeps the memory of the workers’ theatre alive. A few metres away, the street names recall the past. The place invites a slow walk through Hannover’s historic centre.
