Rauhriegel

Rauhriegel is a small village in the Burgenland region of Austria, near the Hungarian border. It sits within the municipality of Weiden bei Rechnitz in the Oberwart district. The village has a history tied to border guards from the 16th century. Later, Croatian settlers arrived and shaped its identity. Rauhriegel was once part of the Kingdom of Hungary before becoming Austrian in 1921. Its past also includes control by Nazi Germany and then Soviet forces after the Second World War. The village is known for its agricultural landscape, with fields and forests covering much of the area. Over the decades, the number of buildings and gardens has grown steadily. In 1979, there were 14 building plots and 18 gardens, but by 2010 the number of plots had risen to 66. Farmland once covered 50 hectares, though this has since decreased. Today, the village balances farming with managed woodland. At the heart of Rauhriegel stands a small Roman Catholic church. The surrounding countryside offers quiet walks through farmland and forests. The soil here is rated moderately fertile, supporting local agriculture. The village’s history and landscape reflect its shifting borders and changing communities. Rauhriegel remains a peaceful place where past and present meet.
