Wallanlage Würzburg

The Wallanlage Würzburg is a suspected former hilltop fortification on the Würzburg hill, about five kilometres north of Wiesbaden. It sits on the southern slopes of the Taunus ridge, surrounded by dense woodland. The hill rises to 399 metres, standing roughly 100 metres lower than the main Taunus crest to the north. Archaeologist Karl August von Cohausen recorded a low stone wall in 1879. His measurements showed an oval earthwork about forty metres long and twenty-four metres wide, enclosing an area of around eleven hundred square metres. Later surveys still detect a faint, smoothed outline of the same shape on the narrow summit ridge. A path called the Graf-Hülsen-Weg curves around the western slope, partly enclosing the site. Today the area is protected as a scheduled monument under Hessian law. Many worked stones lie scattered across the summit, suggesting earlier masonry. The steep slopes drop away sharply to the Rabengrund valley on the west and the Goldsteintal on the east, while a gentle northern slope leads toward the Platte hunting lodge.
