Pfarrkirche Kattau

The Catholic parish church of the Assumption stands in Kattau, a village in the district of Horn in Lower Austria. Built in the 17th century as the chapel of Kattau Castle, it sits beside the castle grounds in a quiet village setting. The church is protected as a listed monument and belongs to the diocese of St Pölten. The church became a parish church in 1783 after earlier work in the 18th century. A tower was added in 1738 and the interior remodelled in the Baroque style soon after. The organ dates from 1845 and the high altar, with its marble finish and side statues, was completed in the mid-1700s. The main painting of the Virgin in glory was added in 1837. Inside, the single-nave church has five bays with a barrel vault and pilasters along the walls. The square tower rises above the east end, its stone detailing and balustraded sound openings clearly visible. The west front shows a plain gable with a small doorway framed by a 17th-century window. The preserved castle cellar lies just north of the church, linking the building to its past.
