Subsidiary church Saint Martin, Moederndorf

The small late-Gothic branch church of St Martin stands in the village of Möderndorf, part of Hermagor in Carinthia. Built in the 15th century, it has a long nave and a slightly recessed two-bay choir ending in five sides. A six-sided roof turret with a pointed spire rises from the centre, and a low sacristy is attached to the north side of the choir. The Christophorus fresco, framed by painted Renaissance pilasters, dates from about 1525 and is attributed to Urban Görtschacher. The church is entered through a pointed, profiled portal with a wooden door fitted with late-Gothic ironwork. Inside, the flat-ceilinged nave holds a wooden west gallery, while a round-arched triumph arch with deep reveals leads to the choir. The choir vault is a stellar ribbed design springing from corbels, and its lunettes show half-length figures of the Evangelists. The high altar, made around 1680, is a two-storey structure rich in scrollwork, crowned by a broken pediment. It carries a Gothic statue of St Martin in the main stage and a late-17th-century figure of St George above. The former high altar, a winged altarpiece from about 1520, bears painted panels of saints and a carved figure of St Martin in its shrine. The right-hand side altar, originally from the nearby St Urban church, dates from about 1520 and centres on a group of the Holy Family. Its movable wings show painted scenes of saints and the Annunciation, while the predella depicts the four Latin Fathers. Other furnishings include a Baroque console statue of the Queen of Heaven and a late-17th-century pulpit. The sacristy, reached through a round-arched portal, is vaulted with cross ribs, completing the church’s carefully preserved late-Gothic character.
