Eulenturm (Kroppenstedt)

The Eulenturm stands in Kroppenstedt, a small town in Sachsen-Anhalt. It is a medieval gate tower that once formed part of the town’s fortifications. Its baroque onion dome roof makes it a distinctive landmark beside the church tower. The tower dates from the early 13th century and was first recorded in 1367. It was one of three gate towers protecting the western entrance. After a fire in 1463 destroyed the town wall, rebuilding began in 1553. By 1595 the gates were staffed by a gatekeeper and a musician. Beside the tower is the local history museum. The tower’s thick walls and small windows show its original defensive purpose. Visitors can walk around its base and see how it once fitted into the town’s defences. The museum displays objects that tell the story of Kroppenstedt’s past.
