Hagensdorf

Hagensdorf lies in the far south-east of Burgenland, where the land meets Hungary along the Strem river and a belt of dense woodland. The village forms part of the larger municipality of Heiligenbrunn, its nearest neighbours being Luising to the east, Deutsch Bieling and Heiligenbrunn itself to the west. A quiet border crossing marks the northern edge, while the southern meadows shelter one of Austria’s rarest wildflowers. The place is worth reaching for its layered past. A prehistoric burial mound was later crowned by a small medieval fortress whose walls once enclosed the first parish church. After the building was demolished in the 18th century, its stones built the present classical church of Saints Cosmas and Damian. A great fire in 1843 destroyed most of the village, which was then rebuilt on a strict grid of long narrow plots. Visitors walk past the old parish house, one of the few buildings to survive the fire, and enter the churchyard where a 1926 war memorial stands among linden trees. A short stroll leads to the Dreifaltigkeitskapelle, a brick chapel with pilasters and a triangular pediment. Beyond the village, the Strem’s flood meadows glow purple each spring when the threatened Schachblume blooms across sixteen hectares of protected grassland.
