Karl Marx statue in Trier

The Karl Marx statue stands in Trier, a city in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany. It occupies Simeonstiftplatz, a public square near the Porta Nigra, an ancient Roman gate. The monument was unveiled in 2018 to mark the 200th anniversary of Marx’s birth. A gift from the People’s Republic of China, it was created by sculptor Wu Weishan. The statue is made of bronze and weighs 2.3 tonnes, with a total height of 5.5 metres including its base. The statue shows Marx in later life striding forward, a book in his left hand and his right hand reaching for his coat lapel. The unveiling drew dignitaries including the Chinese ambassador and the minister-president of Rhineland-Palatinate. Visitors find the statue set against the backdrop of Trier’s historic centre. The surrounding square is paved and lit, with seating areas nearby. The monument’s scale and position make it a focal point in the urban landscape. The five-sided base aligns with the cities that shaped Marx’s work. The bronze figure faces outward, its determined expression drawing attention. The setting offers a place to pause and reflect amid the city’s Roman and medieval landmarks.
