Blackness Castle

Blackness Castle stands on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, near the village of Blackness in Scotland. Built in the 1440s by Sir George Crichton, it began as a fortress on the site of an earlier fort. The castle became crown property in 1453 when it passed to James II of Scotland. It served as a state prison, holding figures such as Cardinal Beaton and the 6th Earl of Angus. Strengthened in the mid-16th century by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, it became one of Scotland’s most advanced artillery fortifications. Later, it fell to Oliver Cromwell’s army in 1650 during his invasion of Scotland. The castle’s long, narrow shape earned it the nickname "the ship that never sailed." Its north and south towers are known as the "stem" and "stern," while the central tower is called the "main mast." The site includes a complex entrance with a caponier, one of only three surviving in Scotland. The curtain wall was thickened to over five metres in places to withstand attacks. The south wall was heightened to enclose the new south tower, and gun ports were added for defence. The castle’s strategic position made it a key stronghold for centuries. Visitors find a fortress shaped like a ship, jutting into the Forth. The central courtyard holds the remains of the original hall range and curtain wall. The north tower, or "stem," and the south tower, or "stern," frame the central "main mast." The caponier, a defensive passage, allows views into the entrance area. The thickened walls and gun ports show how the castle was designed to resist attack. The site offers views across the Firth of Forth, linking its military past to the surrounding landscape.
