Carnedd gron Gelli-Bwch

Carnedd gron Gelli-Bwch is a round cairn near Coed-ffranc in Neath Port Talbot. It dates from the end of the Stone Age into the start of the Bronze Age. The site sits on a gentle slope in open moorland, marked only by a low circular heap of stones. Round cairns like this one were built as part of burial rituals and ceremonies for the dead. They differ from ring cairns, which have a clear stone circle around the edge. Cadw, the historic environment service of Wales, recognises Carnedd gron Gelli-Bwch as an ancient monument. It bears the SAM number GM290, which helps protect it under Welsh law. The same Neolithic and Bronze Age people who raised this cairn also built chambered tombs, burial mounds, stone circles, hill forts, Irish huts and standing stones across the region. Their skills show how communities adapted to changing times. Visitors reach the cairn by following a path across open moorland. The stones lie scattered in a low circle on the hillside, blending with the heather and grass. From the site there are wide views over the surrounding valleys and hills. The quiet landscape lets walkers sense the ancient purpose of the place. No grand structures remain, only the simple stone heap and the open sky.
