Kloster der Töchter der göttlichen Liebe/ St. Josef (Straßentrakt) mit Kapelle
The 19th-century monastery of St Josef in Breitenfurt bei Wien was once a mill beside the Reiche Liesing stream. The four-winged building was bought by the Daughters of Divine Love in 1873 and turned into a convent. The neogothic chapel beside it was added in 1910, designed by Kajetan Miserovsky and Heinrich Winkler. Inside the chapel the altar painting of St Josef dates from 1727. It was painted by Johann Michael Rottmayr for a Carmelite church and later given to the congregation. Robert Eigenberger restored the canvas in 1945–46 before it was placed above the neogothic altar. The chapel’s rectangular choir and side niches show the same neogothic style. The monastery stands on Hauptstraße 58 in the heart of Breitenfurt. Visitors walk past the two-storey wings arranged around a quiet courtyard. The chapel’s gabled portal and small bell tower rise above the roof. The Reiche Liesing still flows past the old mill walls, linking the modern village to its past.
