Saint Stephen Church
The Roman Catholic parish church in Großmürbisch stands in the village of Großmürbisch in Burgenland, near the Hungarian border. The building is dedicated to Saint Stephen, the first king of Hungary, and belongs to the wider parish network of Göttliche Barmherzigkeit. Its setting is quiet, surrounded by the flat farmland of southern Burgenland. The church is worth visiting for its late 19th-century heritage. Built in 1900, it became an independent parish in 1966 after earlier serving as an auxiliary church. The interior still holds an 1800 oil painting of Saint Stephen, originally the high-altar image, framed in carved wood. The organ, made by Peppert Sándor in 1899, has seven stops and adds to the building’s musical tradition. Inside, visitors find the painted image beneath the west gallery. The organ case remains in its original position, showing the craftsmanship of the late 19th century. The church’s simple brick walls and small windows give the interior a calm atmosphere. Outside, the low, broad churchyard wall blends into the surrounding fields and vineyards.
