Burg Hattenheim

Burg Hattenheim stands in the village centre of Hattenheim, a district of Eltville am Rhein in the Rheingau-Taunus district. The ruin is what remains of a medieval castle built around 1118, originally a smaller fortified site. A moat once surrounded the castle, fed by the nearby Leimersbach stream.
The castle passed from the Edlen von Hattenheim to the Langwerth von Simmern family in 1411. For three centuries it served as their home and ancestral seat. In 1711 the family moved to the Stockheimer Hof in Eltville, and the old castle fell into disrepair. The local name changed from ‘Burg’ to the less respectful ‘Bau’.
Today the four-storey residential tower still rises above the village rooftops. Its cross-gabled attic and tall chimney mark the building’s medieval origins. The Burg- und Verschönerungsverein Hattenheim e.V. now organises events and lets the site for private celebrations.
