St. Maria Angelica
St. Maria Angelica is a modern Old Catholic parish church in Hanover. It stands on land once owned by the nearby Lutheran St. James parish, bought in 2003. The building opened for services in 2010 and was consecrated the following year. Designed by Amberge und Schwartze Architekten GmbH, it replaced temporary spaces including a hospital chapel. Construction cost about €1 million, funded by parish funds, the Old Catholic diocese, other parishes and public donations. The church was named after Angélique Arnauld, chosen by parish vote in 2011. The building follows a simple modern style yet echoes traditional western European churches. It is an aisleless hall church with a tent-like roof and faces east, though the street lies there so entry is through the parish hall. Inside, light enters indirectly through staggered chancel windows and a ceiling designed like a starry sky with gold-leaf Greek crosses. A full-immersion baptismal pool sits at the west end of the nave. The church seats around 100 with an extra twenty on the choir gallery. The sanctuary’s altar carries deep numerological symbolism. Its five legs form a Greek cross and represent the stigmata, while the cube shape reflects the Holy Trinity. The mensa’s twelve wooden blocks symbolise the twelve apostles and the twelve tribes of Israel. Two bells hang in a flèche: one donated by St. James parish, the other cast by Glockengießerei Rudolf Perner in Passau and consecrated by Bishop Matthias Ring. The interior’s golden crosses and careful geometry create a quiet, reflective space for worship.
