Schloss Calbe

Schloss Calbe stands on the banks of the Saale in the small town of Calbe. It began as a fortress for the Magdeburg archbishops in the 14th century, replacing an older royal court gifted by Emperor Otto I in 965. The town grew around the archbishops’ presence, forcing them to build a new stronghold outside the city walls. After early setbacks, Archbishop Dietrich of Portitz completed the castle in the late 14th century with three wings and a defensive layout. The castle served as a political hub, refuge and summer residence for the archbishops. It hosted landtag assemblies, negotiations with neighbouring rulers and even imprisoned the notorious robber knight Hans von Quitzow. By the 16th century it had become a grand Renaissance complex with four wings, a square courtyard and seven towers. The castle chapel later became a church for Huguenot settlers, and Albrecht of Brandenburg received Luther’s letters here before rejecting them. Today only traces remain, but the site still holds memorial stones from the old courtyard. A modern school occupies the grounds, yet visitors can walk the surviving paths and see where the castle once dominated the town. The air of Calbe, once praised for its health, still carries echoes of the archbishops, the Reformation debates and the wars that shaped this forgotten power centre.
