Drachenberg transmitter

The Sender Drachenberg stands on the 313-metre Drachenberg hill in the Elm range within the Helmstedt district. A steel lattice mast, 181 metres tall and held by guy wires, carries FM and DAB radio services across the region. Two additional steel-frame directional towers were later built beside the main mast. It began in 1952 as the British Forces Broadcasting Service mast for troops in the Braunschweig area and the transit route to West Berlin. After the early 1990s it passed to Deutsche Telekom, which still operates the site today. Visitors reach the hilltop by a paved path from the Elm’s wooded slopes. The mast’s lattice structure rises above beech and oak woods, with views across the surrounding countryside. The two smaller towers stand close by, their steel frames catching the light at dusk. Information boards near the base explain the site’s broadcasting history. On clear days the Harz mountains can be seen to the south.
