St Peter Mancroft

St Peter Mancroft stands in the heart of Norwich, the largest parish church in the city. Built in Perpendicular Gothic style, it occupies an elevated site beside Norwich Market. The church traces its origins to around 1070, founded by Ralph de Gael, Earl of East Anglia, after the Norman Conquest. Its position in the French Borough, a new quarter for Breton settlers, reflected Norman authority over the city. After a rebellion in 1075, William the Conqueror took control and later transferred it to Gloucester Abbey. The present building largely dates from a major rebuilding between 1430 and 1465, when it became the wealthiest parish church in Norwich. The church has long been a centre of civic and religious life. In 1715, its ringers performed what may be the world’s first true peal, ringing over 5,000 changes on 13 bells. Notable figures such as physician Sir Thomas Browne were buried in the chancel in 1682. The church hosted annual services of thanksgiving for the defeat of Kett’s Rebellion in 1549, attended by the Earl of Warwick. A parochial library above the north porch, established by the 1680s, once held a substantial collection of books. Architectural additions in the 19th century included a new tower parapet with pinnacles and an 1895 flèche. Visitors enter through a west door adorned with carved stone shields showing the crossed keys of Saint Peter. Inside, the nave and aisles rise in Perpendicular Gothic proportions, with large windows flooding the space with light. The chancel retains its medieval arrangement, and the font dates from the 15th century. The tower dominates the skyline and can be climbed for views over the city. Nearby, the Forum now occupies ground once part of the church’s wider precinct. The building remains a landmark in Norwich, its stonework and history visible at every turn.
