Elfbuchen

Elfbuchen is a forested hilltop in the Hoher Habichtswald range north of Kassel. It stands as a narrow spur on the eastern ridge of the Bachberg, rising to about 535 metres above sea level. The area belongs to the Habichtswald Nature Park and forms part of a larger protected habitat zone. The hill is known for two landmarks. The Elfbuchenturm, a 16-metre stone tower built in 1879, once offered wide views across the countryside. Today it is closed, its platform hidden by tree crowns. Nearby, the Waldhotel Elfbuchen serves food and drink in a modern building that grew from a small refreshment hut first set up beside eleven young beeches. Visitors reach Elfbuchen along woodland paths that start near Kassel’s Herkules monument. A gentle circular walk of about three kilometres leads up through beech woods and back down across open meadows. On two days each week a horse-drawn carriage links the hill with the Herkules, giving a slower way to enjoy the changing scenery.
