Burg Triptis

Burg Triptis stands near the centre of Triptis in the Saale-Orla district of Thüringen. It was built as a lowland castle to guard the old trade routes between Saalfeld, Gera and Leipzig. The surrounding land was once mostly marsh and pools, making the site a natural stronghold. The fortress began as a round tower in the 9th century during the wars between German and Slavic peoples. By the 12th century it had grown into a full castle with a moat fed by the town pond. The Lords of Lobdeburg–Arnshaugk built the first stone structure, which passed to the Wettin family in 1290. After damage in the Vogtländischer Krieg of the 1350s, the Wettins regained control and kept the ruins for centuries. Today only the tall round keep remains from the medieval castle. Its thick walls rise above the modern town, a quiet reminder of the past. The surviving tower stands among later buildings that incorporate parts of the old defences. Visitors can walk around the base and see how the castle once dominated the marshy landscape.
