Barony and Castle of Kilbirnie

The substantial remains of Kilbirnie Castle and its sixteenth-century manor house stand west of Kilbirnie town in North Ayrshire, on the lower slopes of the Glengarnock Hills. The site once formed part of the old Barony of Kilbirnie and overlooks a small but deep ravine that once helped defend the castle. The ruins sit just outside the grounds of the Kilbirnie Place Golf Club, which was laid out in 1925 on what were once the castle’s landscaped pleasure grounds. Nearby, an estate called Place was built by the Knox family but is now mostly gone. The name Kilbirnie comes from the Gaelic for ‘Church of St Brendan’, and the parish once contained three baronies. The castle played a part in Scottish history when, in 1263, Alexander III gathered his forces there before the Battle of Largs against the Norwegians. The keep, built around 1470 for Malcolm Crawfurd and his wife Marjory Barclay, is a four-storey defensive tower with walls up to eight feet thick. A narrow prison known as a ‘starving pit’ was entered from a loft-level passage. In 1602 thieves broke in while the laird was away and stole from the charter chest, though the main suspect was later found innocent. The mansion wing, added in 1627, shows fine 17th-century work with turrets and a shallow projecting porch. Visitors today see the tall keep with its thick walls and the remains of the mansion wing at right angles to it. The north-eastern side shows traces of kitchens and an oven. Inside the keep’s fireplace are carved sandstone pieces with Gothic script, possibly saints’ names, intended to ward off evil. The grand avenue that once led to the castle is still partly visible, lined by high walls and now partly within the golf course. Steps and a small building mark where the walled garden once stood, running down to the ravine below. The site offers a quiet glimpse of Scotland’s past, where history and landscape meet.
