Zum Abendmahl des Herrn, Vienna

The Pfarrkirche Akkonplatz stands in the 15th district of Vienna, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, near the corner of Oeverseestraße and Possingergasse. Built between 1978 and 1980 to designs by Josef Vytiska, it was consecrated in 1981 as a parish church. The building is listed as a protected monument in Vienna. The church’s simple concrete structure houses a 400-seat hall used for major Catholic feasts when more space is needed. Inside, whitewashed walls and red-brown floor tiles frame a quiet, almost square space. A narrow band of stained glass runs just below the ceiling, the only natural light apart from the portal window, depicting sun, wheat, grapes and moon. The east wall holds a wooden crucifix without its cross, the Tabernacle with the four Evangelists’ symbols, and a statue of Mary and the Christ Child. Plain wooden chairs are arranged in a circle around the plain wooden altar, allowing free seating during services. The attached chapel features stained glass by Clarisse Praun and Wilhelm Kocian, a 1980 painting of the Last Supper by Hermann Bauch, and wooden figures by Josef Papst.
