Burg Albrechtsberg an der Großen Krems

Burg Albrechtsberg an der Großen Krems stands on a hill above the village of Albrechtsberg in the Krems district of Lower Austria. It is a protected medieval hilltop castle with an attached parish church. The site overlooks the valley of the Große Krems, a tributary of the Danube. The irregular complex rises high above its surroundings, its walls and towers still dominating the landscape. The oldest parts date from the 12th century, though most of the visible structure comes from the 16th century. The castle’s silhouette is marked by a high ring wall with battlements and projecting guard towers. The castle is worth visiting for its well-preserved Renaissance architecture and its layered history. It passed through the hands of the Starhemberg, Neidegg and Peuckham families, each leaving its mark. The Peuckhams rebuilt it as a Renaissance palace after the Hussite wars. Later owners included the Lempruch family, who held it for centuries until the mid-20th century. The geologist Alexander Tollmann and his wife, the palaeontologist Edith Kristan-Tollmann, lived here in the 1990s. Today the castle is being prepared for new uses while retaining its historic character. Inside, visitors find three courtyards arranged around the main buildings. The southern gate shows the date 1675 above its arch. A vaulted arcade on sturdy columns runs along one courtyard. The castle chapel contains the tomb of the Neidegg family. Other features include a smoke kitchen with a tall chimney, rooms with ribbed vaults, a ceiling dated 1604, and an 18th-century granary with a hipped roof. The attached church adds to the ensemble, completing a historic site that blends military, residential and religious architecture.
