Langenberg

Langenberg stands on the border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse, rising to 843 metres as the highest peak in the Rothaar range. The mountain lies where the Hochsauerland region meets the Upland, between villages such as Olsberg-Bruchhausen and Willingen. Its summit sits just 10 metres from the state border, marked by a boundary stone along the Rothaarsteig trail. Two small streams, the Burbecke and the Raken, rise on its flanks and feed into the Gierskoppbach. The upper reaches of the Hoppecke flow past the eastern side, fed by a brook from the valley called Der Keller. The mountain’s slopes are mostly thick forest, while the rounded top opens into open heathland. The Langenberg is worth the journey because it is the highest point in North Rhine-Westphalia and in northern Germany outside the Harz Mountains. A triangulation station stands 15 metres south-east of the summit, only 10 centimetres lower than the recorded height of 843.2 metres. A stone at the top bears a metal plate confirming its status as the region’s highest mountain. The nearby Kahler Asten, often mistakenly cited as the highest, reaches only 841.9 metres but draws more visitors because of its weather station and mountaintop restaurant. The Hochheideturm near Willingen offers the highest accessible viewpoint in the Rothaar range at 875.5 metres. Visitors find a broad, rounded summit with little tree cover and wide views over the surrounding heathland. The Rothaarsteig long-distance path passes the summit to the west, offering walkers a clear route along the ridge. A historic boundary stone stands near the trail, marking the old border between regions. The forested slopes provide shaded walking routes, while the open heath at the top gives panoramic views of the countryside. On clear days the landscape stretches far into Hesse and Westphalia. The contrast between the dense woodland and the open summit creates a quiet, windswept feel at the top.
