Adalbert-Stifter-Gymnasium

The Adalbert Stifter Gymnasium stands in Linz, Upper Austria, as a protected historic school building. Designed in the late historicist style, it was built between 1904 and 1905 for a former Catholic teachers’ training college. The school’s name honours the 19th-century writer Adalbert Stifter, and its h-shaped layout rises four storeys above a basement level. The main façade features neo-Gothic detailing around a central axis topped by a curved gable. Original iron grilles remain on the basement windows from the time of construction. Among its notable graduates are several leading musicians and conductors. Franz Welser-Möst, Elisabeth Fuchs, Johannes Hiemetsberger and Christoph Campestrini all studied here. The list also includes the gambist Lorenz Duftschmid, musicologist Mario Aschauer, pianist Andreas Schnee and composer Martin Fiala. Visual arts are represented by painter Gunter Damisch, while literature is represented by writer Wolfgang Kauer. The school has also produced prominent singers, composers and media figures. Inside, the building preserves its period architecture with high ceilings and large windows. The main staircase rises through the central section, lit by stained-glass panels in the stairwell. Classrooms line the wings, some with original parquet floors and ornamental cornices. The former assembly hall retains its neo-Gothic wood panelling and chandeliers. Outside, the school sits on a quiet street near the historic centre, its stone façade contrasting with modern buildings nearby.
