Mickl-Kaserne

The Mickl-Kaserne is a former Austrian armed forces barracks in Bad Radkersburg, a town in the south-east corner of Styria. Its plain main building faces Plaschenaustraße, with a central section set slightly back and a modest entrance topped by the imperial double eagle and the date 1910. A stone beside the door names Oberleutnant Johann Mickl, honoured for leading local volunteers in the south-Styrian defence struggle between 1919 and 1920. The barracks closed in 2008 when its second company moved to Straß, but the site returned to public use in 2013 when the town exercised its right to buy the property. In 2015 the building was offered to house temporary refugees, though the offer was declined. It was briefly reactivated by the armed forces to help secure the border after the Balkan route was closed. Visitors see the restrained façade and the modest entrance portal with its imperial insignia. A plaque by the door records the name of Johann Mickl. The surrounding Plaschenaustraße area retains the quiet scale of a small frontier town, where the barracks building stands as a quiet witness to twentieth-century military and civic history.
