Dürrenmungenau Castle

Schloss Dürrenmungenau is a moated castle in the Abenberger district of Dürrenmungenau in Mittelfranken. Built in the Historismus style, it stands on the site of a medieval fortress first mentioned in 1278. The castle and its outbuildings are protected monuments. The surrounding area includes a wide moat, a large hop barn from 1736 and a sandstone wall with onion domes. The castle’s history reflects changing ownership through the centuries. After destruction in the Thirty Years’ War, it was rebuilt in baroque form between 1720 and 1725. The Leuckart von Weißdorf family has owned it since 1896 and added new farm buildings around 1900. The estate once exercised limited high justice over nearby villages and held manorial rights over 42 properties. Visitors find a two-storey building with a central tower and dormer windows. The courtyard is framed by the hop barn and a mid-19th-century washhouse. The complex is enclosed by a sandstone wall with onion-topped towers. The surrounding park, orchard and farmyard complete the scene.
