Jenfeld

Jenfeld is a district in the Wandsbek borough of Hamburg. It lies between Rahlstedt and Tonndorf to the north, Marienthal to the west, Billstedt to the south and Barsbüttel in Schleswig-Holstein to the east. Two small streams, the Schleemer Bach and the Barsbek, flow through the eastern edge and feed the Öjendorfer See in Billstedt before reaching the Bille river. In the centre the Jenfelder Bach rises and runs south into the Schleemer Bach. A pond sits in the Jenfelder Moorpark in the north-west. The name comes from Gelevelde, meaning ‘yellow field’, and the village was first recorded in 1304. After the Reformation it passed to the Reinbek monastery and later returned to the crown. Prussian reforms in the late 19th century placed Jenfeld in the Stormarn district. Three barracks built in the 1930s—Douaumont, Lettow-Vorbeck and von-Estorff—now partly house homes and the Helmut-Schmidt-Universität. Jenfeld joined Hamburg in 1937 and became a separate district in 1951. A tree planted in 2014 near the Jenfelder Moorpark entrance marks German reunification. The Moorpark itself holds a pond and a central green space. At the Denksteinweg/Bei den Höfen a small square centres on a memorial stone and three oaks, planted for Jenfeld’s 700th anniversary in 2004. The district’s schools, youth clubs and sports facilities sit among low-rise housing and quiet streets.
