Stowe

Stowe is a civil parish in Buckinghamshire, England, about three kilometres northwest of Buckingham. The parish includes the hamlets of Boycott, Dadford and Lamport. Stowe House, a Grade I listed country house, now serves as Stowe School. The manor of Stowe dates back to before the Norman conquest. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded the manor as five hides, held by William the Conqueror’s half-brother Odo. The estate passed through various hands, including the Augustinians of Osney Abbey and the Diocese of Oxford. In 1590, John Underhill conveyed Stowe to Elizabeth I, who granted it to new owners. The Temple-Grenville family owned the estate for centuries, enclosing a deer park in 1651. The village was likely abandoned at this time. Stowe School was founded on the estate in 1923. The parish church of the Assumption of the Blessèd Virgin Mary has parts dating to the 13th century. Its west tower was added in the 13th century, followed by the chancel in about 1350. The church has a ring of six bells, with the newest cast in 1988. Stowe House’s landscaped gardens and monuments are managed by the National Trust. Films such as *Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade* and *The World Is Not Enough* were shot here.
