Bridge Theatre

The Bridge Theatre stands beside Tower Bridge in London, a modern commercial playhouse that opened in October 2017. It was created by Nick Starr and Nicholas Hytner as the new home for the London Theatre Company, founded after their time at the National Theatre. The building cost £12 million and was financed by private investors. It has a partnership with the Michelin-starred St. John restaurant, which supplies its famous madeleines. In 2026 Trafalgar Entertainment took over the theatre and the company. The theatre is known for its flexible layout that changes with each production. It seats 900 but can hold up to 1,100 when arranged for promenade performances. Julius Caesar in 2018 and A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2019 removed the stalls so the audience stood around moving platforms in an in-the-round experience. Nightfall in 2018 used a thrust stage that reached into the audience. Visitors find a space designed for close-up theatre. The stage can become a promenade where people walk among the action, or a thrust that brings actors into the stalls. The foyer offers food and drink from St. John, including the theatre’s signature madeleines. The surroundings look out toward Tower Bridge and the City beyond, linking modern performance with historic London.
