Virgental

The Virgental is a valley in East Tyrol, Austria, set within the Venediger Group of the Hohe Tauern range. It stretches from the Matreier Basin at 934 metres up to the Umbal Falls, where the Umbal Valley continues westward. The Isel River flows through the valley, joined by the Maurerbach and Dorferbach streams on its left bank. The valley narrows dramatically at the Isel Gorge before climbing over 1,300 metres to its upper reaches. Farmland and meadows line the valley floor, while higher slopes support alpine pastures. Side valleys branch off both north and south, including the Timmeltal near Prägraten and the Mullitztal in the Lasörling range, as well as smaller gorges like the Fratnikgraben and Zuniggraben. Several villages dot the valley, from Ströden in the west to Zedlach in the east. Hinterbichl sits near the Isel Gorge, while Prägraten am Großvenediger lies closer to the Venediger massif. The route passes through Wallhorn and Virgen, with Mitteldorf and Niedermauern marking the valley’s lower section. Each settlement reflects the valley’s farming and alpine traditions.
