St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Leigh

St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church stands in Leigh, a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan. It is an active church in the parish of St Edmund Arrowsmith and holds Grade II listed status from English Heritage. The building replaced an earlier brick chapel that had opened in 1778. Construction began in 1855 and the nave, chancel and tower base were completed under Father John Middlehurst. Father James Fanning finished the tower in 1878, giving the church its tall west tower. The church was designed by Joseph Hansom in the Gothic Revival style using hammer-dressed stone and a slate roof. The exterior shows nine bays on the north and south sides, separated by buttresses and three-light windows with Geometrical tracery. The chancel has two and three-light windows, and the tower rises in three stages with angled buttresses and a stair turret. Above the west door is a statue in a niche, and the belfry stage has four lancet windows. Nikolaus Pevsner called the interior “startling” for its wide preaching-box shape and apsidal chancel. A hammerbeam roof once failed, so slender cast iron columns with palm capitals now support iron arches and braces. Inside, the wide nave leads to a polygonal chancel with chapels on the north and south sides. A sacristy and south porch sit at the edges, and the west tower rises above the main entrance. The interior’s hammerbeam roof gave way to iron columns that create an arcade beneath the roof. The church’s design mixes sturdy stonework with delicate ironwork, giving a striking contrast. Visitors find a quiet place of worship with a strong sense of local Catholic history.
