Komödie im Marquardt

The Komödie im Marquardt stands in the Marquardtbau on Stuttgart’s Schlossplatz. Built in 1951 by Berthold Sakmann, it occupies a prominent position beside the city’s main palace. The theatre’s early years drew many post-war stars, including Heinz Erhardt, Conny Froboess and Harald Juhnke. In 1976 Elert Bode took charge and later ran both the Komödie and the Alte Schauspielhaus together. A major renovation in 2002 refreshed the auditorium under Carl Philip von Maldeghem’s leadership. The house specialises in comic entertainment of every kind. Its programme ranges from boulevard farce and love comedies to Swabian dialect pieces and classical comedy. Guests have included Walter Schultheiss, Joerg Adae and Monika Hirschle. The theatre also hosts management-by-shakespeare seminars for executives. A lively friendeskreis organises extra events and awards annual audience prizes for best performances. Inside, the intimate playhouse seats a compact audience close to the stage. The walls carry mementoes of past stars and productions. Outside, the Schlossplatz buzzes with visitors to the palace and cafés. The theatre’s location makes it an easy stop after a stroll through Stuttgart’s centre.
