Städtisches Museum Neunkirchen, Lower Austria

The Städtisches Museum Neunkirchen stands in a protected building on Stockhammergasse in the town centre of Neunkirchen, Lower Austria. The museum began in 1910 when Heinrich Moses, a local teacher, assembled a collection of historical objects. After opening in two rooms of the town hall the following year, the museum closed during the First World War and reopened in the 1920s under Fritz Weninger, who expanded the holdings from 200 to 1200 items. The collection grew to more than 4000 objects by 1938, covering archaeology, folk art, minerals and natural history. After the town hall burned in 1945, the museum moved into the former home of mayor Emil Stockhammer. Staff safeguarded the artefacts during the Second World War and recovered most after the conflict. The post-war years saw changes in leadership and a period of limited progress in cataloguing and conservation. Today the museum occupies a single-storey space reached through an entrance hall. Inside, displays trace the town’s history from Roman finds to modern times. Visitors see archaeological fragments, medieval weapons, mineral specimens and local crafts. The surroundings include quiet streets lined with traditional buildings, a short walk from Neunkirchen’s main square.
