Pfarrkirche Zur Kreuzerhöhung, Wulkaprodersdorf

The Roman Catholic parish church of Wulkaprodersdorf stands inside a fortified enclosure at the western edge of the village in the market town of Wulkaprodersdorf. The church, dedicated to the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, belongs to the deanery of Trausdorf in the Diocese of Eisenstadt. It has been listed as a protected monument since the 20th century. The building began as a medieval parish church first recorded in 1337. A new church was consecrated in 1642, damaged in the Turkish war of 1683, repaired in 1713, and given a tower in 1801. After a fire in 1866 the tower was rebuilt, and the interior was restored in 1960 and 1978–79. Exterior work followed in 1973. The early Baroque church has a tall tower set into the north half of the west gable. The tower carries a stone spire topped by finials and a cross. On the right side of the façade a porch stands on fluted columns dated 1630. The nave is flanked by two-storey sacristies, and the choir ends in an eight-sided apse with simple stepped buttresses. Inside, the mid-18th-century high altar features a free-standing tabernacle and a carved Crucifixion group. A 1778 bell by Johann Georg Koechel hangs in the tower, and a modern organ with sixteen stops was installed in 2005.
