Burg Rode

Burg Rode stands in the centre of Herzogenrath, a town in the Städteregion Aachen near the Dutch border. It is a hilltop castle built on the Wurm river, once a key crossing point for trade. The fortress was first mentioned in 1104 as part of a settlement belonging to the Counts of Saffenberg. Over the centuries it served as both a border stronghold and a customs post. The name Herzogenrath appears in 1282 as ‘s’Hertogenrode’, meaning ‘the duke’s clearing’. The castle’s importance is shown by its role in the Limburg succession war and the Battle of Worringen in 1288. Historians Johannes Becker and Stefan Becker argue that control of the customs revenues, which reached over 3,300 gold guilders a year, made the site vital. The Habsburgs held it for 250 years until the French occupation in 1794. In the 20th century it was restored in historicising style and used as Herzogenrath’s town hall until 1978. Visitors find a medieval castle with later additions, set in the town square. The Verein Burg Rode Herzogenrath organises concerts, exhibitions and the annual Burgfest in June. Guided tours explain the fortress’s history, and the registry office holds weddings inside. The castle’s outer walls and towers overlook the river, while nearby Rolduc Abbey adds to the historic surroundings.
