Schloss Kaltenberg
Schloss Kaltenberg stands in the village of Geltendorf in Upper Bavaria. The castle was first built in 1292 by Rudolf I, Duke of Bavaria, and has passed through many hands over the centuries. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times, including after damage in the Thirty Years' War. The Knights of Malta owned it in the late 18th century before a brewery opened there in 1870. The castle was then renovated in a neo-Gothic style that remains today. The castle is worth visiting for its long history and its role in brewing. Over 100,000 hectolitres of beer are produced annually at the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei, which has operated there since 1870. Prince Luitpold of Bavaria, a descendant of Bavaria’s last king, lives in the castle and runs the brewery. The castle also hosts the Kaltenberger Ritterturnier, a major knights’ tournament that draws over 100,000 visitors each year. Visitors find a grand neo-Gothic castle with a working brewery inside its walls. The castle includes a ballroom used for events and two restaurants for guests. The surrounding village of Geltendorf adds to the historic atmosphere. The annual knights’ tournament brings colourful displays of medieval life to the grounds. The brewery produces beer on a large scale, linking the castle’s past with its present.
