Potzberg tower

The Potzberg Tower stands on the 562-metre-high Potzberg in the Landkreis Kusel. It is a brick lookout and transmitting tower built in late 1951. The base is 4 by 7 metres wide and 35 metres tall. Above it rise two slender radio masts adding another 18.5 metres. The tower was completed in just eight weeks and opened in July 1952. The site is worth the journey for its sweeping views across the Palatinate Forest. From the top platform at 53.5 metres visitors can see for up to 50 kilometres on clear days. The tower’s rapid construction after the war symbolises post-war recovery. It remains one of the few surviving examples of early German broadcasting infrastructure. Inside, a spiral staircase of 165 steps leads to the viewing gallery. The brick walls are laid in a simple pattern of red and grey shades. Outside, benches face the panorama of rolling hills and forests. The surrounding nature reserve offers quiet walking trails and picnic spots below the tower.
