St Edward's Church

St Edward’s Church stands in the heart of Stow-on-the-Wold, a small town in the Cotswolds known for its neat stone buildings. Built mainly in the 12th to 15th centuries, the church mixes Norman, Gothic and later styles. Its square tower, wide aisles and large stained-glass windows make it one of 98 Grade I listed buildings in the Cotswold district. The churchyard is kept tidy, and the building’s Cotswold stone walls and buttresses show the craftsmanship of past centuries. Inside, the floor plan is shaped like a cross, with a nave, transepts and a chancel. The tower, completed in 1447, rises 26.8 metres and holds Gloucestershire’s heaviest ring of eight bells. The church’s long history reflects the town’s prosperity from the wool trade. The tower and clerestory were paid for by medieval wool wealth, and later restorations kept the building in good condition. In 1873 the rector, Reverend Robert William Hippisley, hired architect John Loughborough Pearson to conserve the church without heavy Victorian changes. The interior shows 13th-century arcades, a 14th-century chancel roof and a 16th-century font. The west window has a 14th-century reticulated design, and the south aisle holds a painting by Gaspar de Craeyer, a contemporary of Rubens and Van Dyck. Visitors walk through a gabled south porch and a 17th-century north porch to enter the nave. The north aisle has late tracery windows and a small 13th-century lancet, while the south aisle shows 14th-century tracery. The chancel has tall 14th-century windows and a flowing east window by Pearson. The tower’s four stages include battlements with blank arches and crocketed pinnacles. The church also remembers the Battle of Stow-on-the-Wold in 1646, when Royalist prisoners were held inside after defeat. Memorials to those who died in the two world wars line the walls, and the church has hosted notable events, including the funeral of John Entwistle of The Who in 2002.
