English Theatre Berlin

English Theatre Berlin is a theatre in Berlin-Kreuzberg that stages performances only in English. It has two stages and occupies the F40 building, which it shares with Thikwa Theatre. The theatre was founded in 1990 by Bernd Hoffmeister and Martin Kamratowski under the name Freunde der Italienischen Oper. The theatre began with German-language productions but soon shifted to English. Its first English-language show was Noodle Highway by Joy Cutler in winter 1990. By 1993 it had become fully English-speaking and changed its name to Friends of Italian Opera – The English Theatre. Since 2008 it has operated from the F40, a theatre with a 140-seat main stage and a 60-seat studio. Günther Grosser has been artistic director since 1993, with Bernd Hoffmeister as managing director and Daniel Brunet as producing artistic director since 2012. The programme features contemporary plays, performances by international guests and new writing. Past successes include Travels With My Aunt adapted by Graham Greene and directed by Benjamin Twist in 2001. The theatre also runs theatre-education projects with Berlin schools and, from 2010 to 2018, collaborated with microbiologist Regine Hengge on projects linking science and performance.
