Brennet

The Brennet is the highest peak of the Kirchmauer ridge in Upper Austria’s Voralpen. Rising to 1,249 metres between the Steyrtal and Steyrlingtal valleys, it belongs to the northernmost section of the Pyhrn-Priel region. The mountain stands almost exactly between the villages of Klaus and Steyrling, just above the Schloss Klaus and its hilltop church. No marked or secured paths lead to the summit, so only experienced mountaineers attempt the climb. On the south-eastern flank lies the old limestone quarry of Steyrling, its white scars visible from below. The contrast between the green slopes and the pale rock face adds a striking detail to the landscape. From Klaus the mountain appears as a steep, wooded pyramid. Walkers on the lower slopes find quiet forest tracks and open meadows where chamois graze. The church and castle below frame the view, anchoring the Brennet in the settled valley world.
