Church of the Holy Cross

The Church of the Holy Cross stands on a hillside above the beach at Mwnt in Ceredigion. It is a small medieval chapel built probably in the 13th century. The whitewashed stone walls and slate roof give it a simple, weathered look. Inside, the single chamber has deep-set windows and an unusual roof shape. The church was restored in 1853 and again after storm damage in 1917. It is one of the few surviving sailors’ chapels of ease in Wales. A 12th- or 13th-century font made of Preseli stone still stands inside. The hexagonal pulpit dates from the Victorian period. The churchyard holds a number of graves with inscriptions recorded by the Dyfed Family History Society. Visitors find a quiet place with wide views over Cardigan Bay. The beach below is reached by a short path from the church. The site has been used since the Age of the Saints, long before the present building. After vandalism in 2021, an international appeal raised £20,000 to repair the damage.
