Bielerhöhe Pass

The Bielerhöhe is a high mountain pass in the Austrian Alps, standing at 2,037 metres above sea level. It links the Montafon valley in Vorarlberg with the Paznaun valley in Tirol, forming part of the watershed between the Rhine and Danube rivers. Two valleys, the Great Vermunt and the Small Vermunt, extend from the pass, feeding the Ill and Trisanna rivers respectively. The Silvretta reservoir dominates the landscape, its waters submerging parts of the Ochsen valley and reaching almost to the pass itself. Nearby peaks include the Bierlerspitze to the north and the Hohes Rad and Lobspitzen to the south, with the Piz Buin rising in the distance. The pass is the highest point on the Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße, a scenic toll road that rises steeply from Partenen through more than twenty-five hairpin bends. In winter the road is closed to ordinary traffic, but access is still possible via the Vermunt cable car and a shuttle through a tunnel, allowing winter sports to continue. The Madlenerhaus, a base for the German Alpine Club, and the Silvrettahaus, built in the early 1990s, provide accommodation and shelter. The Barbara Chapel, built in the 1960s, serves the small community that lives and works around the reservoir. Visitors find a stark alpine setting with dramatic views of surrounding peaks and the reservoir’s deep blue waters. The Silvrettahaus and Madlenerhaus offer meals and lodging, while the chapel stands as a quiet reminder of those who built the power station. In summer the reservoir is a popular fishing spot, and the cable car provides access to high walking trails. In winter the ski area offers two kilometres of piste and extensive ski touring routes, supported by changing facilities and lockers for day tours. The entire region is marketed as a paradise for cross-country skiing and ski touring, with unusual provisions for those who prefer to explore beyond the groomed slopes.
