A14 road

The A14 is a major trunk road running 204 kilometres from the Catthorpe Interchange in Leicestershire to the port of Felixstowe in Suffolk. It passes through Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk, linking the Midlands to East Anglia. The road carries large volumes of cargo between the UK and mainland Europe. It forms part of the unsigned Euroroutes E24 and E30. The A14 carries anything from cars to heavy lorries and is the busiest shipping lane in East Anglia. It bypasses towns such as Huntingdon, Cambridge and Ipswich to improve traffic flow. The road has been widened in several places, including a dual four-lane section between Bar Hill and Girton Interchange. There are three at-grade junctions along its length, including one at Dockspur Roundabout near Felixstowe. A visitor finds a dual carriageway mostly with two lanes each way, with some three- and four-lane sections. The Orwell Bridge carries the road over the River Orwell near Ipswich. The route passes through Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket before reaching the Port of Felixstowe. The road connects the Midlands to East Anglia’s major container port.
