Christ Church

Christ Church stands at the southern edge of Reading town centre where Christchurch Road meets Kendrick Road. Its tall tower and slender spire frame the view up Kendrick Road, drawing the eye towards the building. Designed in the High Victorian style, the church is recognised as a Grade II* listed structure. The present church was completed in 1862 by architect Henry Woodyer and consecrated that August. It began as a chapel to ease pressure on St Giles’ Church. In 1874 a tower, spire, south aisle and vestries were added, giving the church its current form. Inside, the nave leads to a chancel with stained glass and simple furnishings. The tower and spire rise above the entrance, visible from Kendrick Road. The surrounding area mixes residential streets with small shops, creating a quiet urban setting.
