Freibad Kirchdorf

The Freibad Kirchdorf is a municipal outdoor swimming pool built in 1967 at the southern edge of the village of Kirchdorf an der Iller. It sits beside the Iller valley road, sharing the sports grounds with the Dr.-Hans-Liebherr-Stadion, tennis courts and a grass playing field. The main feature is an eight-lane 50-metre pool, the largest of its kind in the Landkreis Biberach when measured in 2013. The site includes a 5-metre diving tower with platforms at one and three metres, plus a 70-metre water slide added in 1990–91. A second children’s pool opened in 2001, and around four large umbrellas children can splash in the ship canal, play under two water-spouting dolphins or use the changing room. On sunny days up to 5 000 visitors relax on the 25 000 m² lawn, while annual attendance has ranged from 63 184 to 132 908 bathers. Paths lead between the pools and the car park, passing the slide entrance and the shaded picnic lawns. The diving tower overlooks the main pool, and the slide ends in a gentle curve beside the children’s area. In the background the Iller valley hills frame the scene, giving a quiet countryside setting for a day by the water.
