St Berres' Church

St Berres' Church stands in the village of Llanferres, Denbighshire, on the A494 road between Mold and Ruthin. It is an Anglican church, part of the Bro Famau Group of Churches within the diocese of St Asaph. The building is constructed from limestone with slate roofs and grey ridge tiles. Its plan includes a nave and chancel in one cell, a south transept, a west tower, and a porch near the northwest angle. The church is designated as a Grade II listed building by Cadw. The church’s history stretches back to at least 1291, though it may have medieval origins. Alterations in the 17th century are marked by a datestone from 1650. Rebuilding in 1774 was likely directed by Chester architect Joseph Turner. Later, Thomas Jones added the south transept, west tower, and possibly two galleries. John Douglas carried out an internal restoration in 1891–92, including stripping plaster and removing galleries. Inside, the font features a bowl with quatrefoils and is dated 1684. Two sepulchral slabs date from the late 13th century, while other monuments range from the late 14th to the 18th centuries. The churchyard contains war graves of a Welsh Guards soldier and an airman from World War II. The gate piers in the churchyard are also Grade II listed.
