Hoftheater

The Hoftheater Sigmaringen stands in the centre of Sigmaringen, a small town in the Regierungsbezirk Tübingen. Built in the early 19th century as a theatre and later used as a cinema, the building fell into disuse before being revived as a venue for small-scale performances and films. Its history reflects the town’s changing cultural life, from princely patronage in the 19th century to post-war touring ensembles. The theatre’s golden years came after the Second World War under Robert Marenckes, when it reopened as the Hohenzollerisches Landestheater. Famous actors such as Theodor Loos and a young Toni Berger appeared on its stage, while the repertoire included works by Goethe. In later decades the building served as a cinema, but by the 1980s its foyer had been remodelled to house a café and a striking relief by Franz Xaver Marmon. Today the Hoftheater hosts a lively programme of Kleinkunst and film events. The restored 1950s foyer, with its gondola-shaped ticket booth, sets the scene for evenings of music, readings and cabaret. The annual Sigmaringer Kulturherbst brings well-known writers and performers to the stage, continuing the tradition of lively cultural exchange.
