Obermenzing cemetery
The Waldfriedhof Obermenzing lies in the Munich suburb of Obermenzing, a quiet green space on Bergsonstraße. The 8.02-hectare cemetery holds 3,600 graves, including earth graves, urn plots and tree burials. A neoclassical hall with a pillared porch was added in 1912–13 from designs by Adolf Fraas. The site opened in 1913 when Obermenzing was still a separate village. Among those laid to rest are architect August Exter, sculptor Karl Himmelstoß, writer Ellis Kaut and film pioneer Peter Ostermayr. Actors Hans Jürgen Diedrich and Ruth von Zerboni share the grounds with composer Karl Richard Tschon and sculptor Maria Weber. Paths wind beneath tall trees past simple headstones and family plots. The Trauerhalle’s classical lines frame views of lawns and shrubs. Visitors find a place of reflection where Munich’s cultural figures rest under the open sky.
