Royal United Services Institute

The Royal United Services Institute stands in Whitehall, Westminster, next to the Banqueting House. It is the world’s oldest defence and security think tank, founded in 1831 by the first Duke of Wellington. The institute moved to its current purpose-built headquarters in 1895 after earlier homes in Whitehall Court and Middle Scotland Yard. Queen Victoria granted the use of the Banqueting House before the final move. Today the building houses research, analysis and publications on military doctrine and security threats. The institute is recognised internationally for its work. It publishes the RUSI Journal, started in 1857, and hosts a specialist library of military history with rare books and archival collections. RUSI has twice been named Think Tank of the Year by Prospect magazine and ranks among the world’s most cited think tanks. Its experts provide commentary on leading defence issues and advise governments and agencies. Visitors find a quiet headquarters beside the Banqueting House. Inside, the library holds maps, manuscripts and publications on naval and military science. The fine art collection includes paintings and prints donated by members such as Admiral Sir Edward Belcher. Outside, Whitehall’s historic setting offers views of government buildings and the Horse Guards Parade.
